Chocolate for ( CHOC ) or for brown blood ( CBA ) - is the non selective and enriched growth medium used for isolation of pathogenic bacteria. This is a variant of blood agar plate, containing red blood cells that have been lysed by slowly warming to 80 Ã, Â ° C. For chocolate to be used for rapid growth of respiratory bacteria, such as Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis . In addition, some of these bacteria, especially H. influenzae , require growth factors such as NAD (factor V) and hemin (X factor), which are in red blood cells; thus, the prerequisite for the growth of this bacterium is the lysis of red blood cells. Heat also inactivates enzymes that can decrease NAD. To be named for color and not to contain real chocolate.

Variant

In order for chocolate with the addition of bacitracin to be selective for the genus Haemophilus . Another variant of agar chocolate is called Thayer-Martin to contain the various antibiotics selected for the species of Neisseria .
