History
Establishments and early years
The origins of the company date back to 1836, when David SprÃÆ'üngli-Schwarz and his son Rudolf SprÃÆ'üngli-Ammann bought a small candy shop in the old town of ZÃÆ'ürich, producing chocolates under the name David SprÃÆ'üngli & amp; Son. Two years later, a small factory was added that produced chocolate in solid form. In 1845, they moved to Paradeplatz.
With the retirement of Rudolf SprÃÆ'üngli-Ammann in 1892, business was shared between his two sons. David Robert's younger brother received two candy shops known as Confiserie SprÃÆ'üngli. Oldest brother Johann Rudolf receives a chocolate factory. To improve the finances needed for expansion plans, Johann Rudolf transformed his private company into "Chocolat SprÃÆ'üngli AG" in 1899. That same year, he acquired the Rodolphe Lindt chocolate factory in Bern, and the company renamed "Aktiengesellschaft". Vereinigte Berner und ZÃÆ'üricher Chocoladefabriken Lindt & amp; SprÃÆ'üngli "(United Bern and Zurich Lindt and Sprungli Chocolate Factory Ltd.).
Expansion
In 1994, Lindt & amp; SprÃÆ'üngli acquired the Austrian chocolatier, Hofbauer ÃÆ' â ⬠"sterreich, and combined it, together with the KÃÆ'üfferle brand, into the company. In 1997 and 1998, respectively, the company acquired Chaffatiel Italia Caffarel and Chocolatier Ghirardelli America, and integrated them into the company as a wholly owned subsidiary. Since then, Lindt & amp; SprÃÆ'üngli has expanded its once-regional Ghirardelli into the international market.
On March 17, 2009, Lindt announced the closing of 50 of its 80 retail boutiques in the United States due to weak demand in the midst of the recession of the late 2000s.
Recent developments
On July 14, 2014, Lindt bought Russell Stover Candies, maker of Whitman Chocolate, about $ 1 billion, the company's largest acquisition to date.

Criticism
In September 2017, an investigation conducted by Perkasa Earth NGOs found that a large number of chocolates used in chocolate produced by Lindt and other large chocolate companies were illegally planted in national parks and other protected areas in Ivory Coast and Ghana. Countries are the two largest chocolate producers in the world.
This report documents how in some national parks and other protected areas, 90% or more of the land has been converted to cocoa. Less than four percent of Ivory Coast remains heavily forested, and laissez-faire approaches to chocolate firms for resources have encouraged extensive deforestation in Ghana, as well.
