Dillons is a wholesale supermarket chain based in Hutchinson, Kansas, and is a division of The Kroger Company. Other banners under the Dillon Store Division include Gerbes in Missouri, Baker's in Omaha, Nebraska, and 4 Food Less stores in Fremont, Nebraska. Dillons operates a grocery store in Kansas with great influence in and around Wichita, Topeka and Lawrence.
Dillons operates a dry-goods warehouse at Goddard, near Wichita, in addition to frozen food and a perishable warehouse in Hutchinson. The bakery and dairy products also exist in Hutchinson. The dairy products produce cultured dairy products and personalized milk labels for all Dillons stores. Dillons previously operated (until the late 1990s) dry-food storehouses in Hutchinson and Lenexa, Kansas.

In the 1890s, John S. Dillon opened a general store in Sterling, Kansas, and learned that allowing customers to pay later and paying back and sending groceries to their homes is a financial and labor burden in his business. In 1913, he opened "J.S. Dillon Cash Store" in Hutchinson, Kansas using a new marketing concept called cash and carry, where the store will not offer credit or shipping services. Dillon opened a second store in 1915 which he organized and placed his son, Ray E. Dillon, who was in charge of the original store. In 1917, the company was founded under the name "Dillon Mercantile Company, Inc.". Because his sons, John and Ray, both overseas in France during World War I, Dillon sold his company to his investment partner, but soon afterwards his sons returned. They opened a new store called "J.S. Dillon and Sons Store" in 1919 and founded in 1921.
After decades of continuing to build chains, the explosive growth began in 1957, when John's son Raymond expanded with an additional store in the Wichita market when, in September 1957, Kroger sold the Wichita, Kansas, shop division, and formed from 16 stores. In 1968, J.S. Dillon and Sons have grown to Dillon Companies, Inc., and began acquiring regional banners, such as the City Market, Fry, Gerbes, and King Soopers, over 300 department stores in five states and Jackson's Ice Cream factory. Dillon Companies, Inc., joined Kroger in 1983 and brought with them two future CEOs: Joe Pichler, who served as Kroger's CEO from 1990 to 2003, and Kroger's former CEO, Dave Dillon. Dave is the grandson of J. S. Dillon.
Currently, more than 12,000 employees work in 93 stores in the Dillon Store Division, which includes 26 stores in Wichita, Kansas, area; 11 stores in Omaha, Nebraska, area; nine stores in Topeka, Kansas; and 24 fuel centers. The format for most locations is a combination of traditional food, general merchandise, and pharmaceuticals, with an average of 49,000 square feet per store. This division offers Dillons Marketplace stores in Kansas, located in Wichita, Andover, Derby, and Hutchinson.
In 1983, Dillon Companies, Inc., acquired by The Kroger Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, created a national wholesale chain. A few years later, David Dillon was named Kroger's President and COO and became CEO in 2003. Dillon retired from the position effective January 1, 2014.
In 2006, Kroger opened the first Dillons Marketplace in Wichita, Kansas. The concept, similar to Fred Meyer Kroger's chain, is 110,000 square feet (10,000 m 2 ) of groceries and general goods.
In 2013, Dillons opened the fifth Marketplace in his hometown of Hutchinson, on the corner of 30th and Waldron Avenue; it is the largest store in the company.

Gerbes
Frank J. Gerbes founded Gerbes Super Markets, Inc. in Tipton, Missouri in 1933. In subsequent years, he will build many buildings that store stores and offices. In 1959, a profit-and-retirement plan was entrusted to all employees by Mr. and Mrs. Gerbes, which is the first in the center of Missouri.
In 1966, Gerbes joined the Dillon Company, and has been a division ever since. Gerbes currently has eight stores in central Missouri, mainly in the cities of Columbia and Jefferson City.
