History

The Weiners Circle opened for business in 1983. Sometimes in the early 1990s (around 1992) Larry Gold, one of its owners, called a drunk and disturbed customer a "jerk" to get his attention. This sparked a late-night misuse of restaurant culture. The atmosphere can range from playing to hostile. The language used by staff and customers during these hours is notoriously rotten and aggressive. On weekends, the company stays open until 5:00 am, attracting many drunk customers coming from bars and clubs.

Night tip is very high, and people have been working there for ten years or so. The hot dog location stands to the north of what used to be the Wrightwood Hotel. In 2008, the restaurant was closed briefly by health inspectors for lack of running hot water where employees would wash their hands, and other food safety breaches.

In March 2016, the restaurant offered a 3-inch hot dog "Trump footlong". In June 2017 they advertise "Paris Accord compliant covfefe".

One of the more famous employees was Roberta "Poochie" Jackson, who was shown (along with the restaurant) in a 2007 episode of the Showtime television version of Chicago Public Radio's American Life program, as well as an episode of Extreme Fast Food on the Travel Channel. In Chicago travel guides, The Wieners Circle is often hailed as a source for authentic Chicago style hot dogs and unique and rustic customer relationships. Journalist Catherine Price listed The Wieners Circle in her book 101 Places Not to See Before You Die, calling it the "microcosm of segregation in Chicago", and commented, "If our metrics are 'places that make me sad about humanity, 'late at Wiener's Circle will be upstairs.'

The restaurant was featured in an episode of Insomniac with Dave Attell at Comedy Central in 2002.

The restaurant is setting for a reality show truTV.

The restaurant is a setting of sketches featuring Jack McBrayer and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog in the June 14, 2012 episode of the nightly talk show Conan , which is the last of a week of the event recorded in Chicago.

The restaurant is featured in a special episode of Extreme Fast Food on the Travel Channel.

In the episode of "Going Deep" from The Great Indoors Jack took Eddie there to cheer him up after his divorce, only to have Valerie's staff (played by Poochie Jackson himself) unknowingly tearing Eddie about his divorce. Jack then sends Clark and Emma to it as a joke, because they do not understand that contempt is part of the experience.
