The Canada tax refund consists of reporting the amounts of taxable income, tax credits, and other information relating to the previous year (January to December) and other information related to both items. The results of filing a refund with the federal government may result in a refund (the money paid to the person or company filing a refund), or the amount to be paid. There is a penalty for not filing a tax return.

Normally, the individual Canadian tax refund for a given year must be filed on April 30 of the year after . There is no provision to generally extend this deadline, but there are some exceptions.

  • The tax returns for individual entrepreneurs and their spouses must be filed on the 15th of June of the following year. However, any Sales Tax on Goods and Services payable for the period is April 30.
  • The tax return for the deceased should be filed at the normal filing deadline or 6 months after the date of death, whichever comes later. Example: Mary died on January 30, 2004; Its repayment in 2003 will mature on July 30, 2004 (six months later) and its return in 2004 will mature on April 30, 2005 (normal filing deadline). This provision also applies to the surviving spouse.
  • The tax return for non-residents who choose to file under section 217 is due 30 June of the following year.
  • Under the Interpretation Act, the due date of all individual returns is transferred to the next business day when the normal due date falls on a Sunday or Public Holiday. Although ministerial orders are also used to apply this until Saturday due date, it is not a legal requirement.
  • The Federal Finance Minister may extend the deadline in case of emergency situations such as floods, etc.

Canadian federal tax returns are submitted to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

In addition, returns play a role in voter registration by entering checkboxes that ask whether people are signed whether they are willing to have their personal contact information including on the national voters list accessible to Canadian and provincial elections.
