The siege of the KÃÆ'  ¥ llandsÃÆ' Bent Fortress took place during the winter in 1099 by the Swedish king Inge Stenkilsson. It was Inge's first response to King Magnus Barefoot Norway who had a year or two earlier attacked VÃÆ'¤stergÃÆ'¶taland, hoping to expand Norway's border into GÃÆ'¶taÃÆ'¤lv.

Prelude

Magnus Barefoot, the year before 1099, has expanded the influence of Norway around the Irish sea. It was not until the end of the summer of 1099 that he finally returned to Norway. But his motives changed and he decided to head east, with the idea of expanding Norway's border into GÃÆ'¶taÃÆ'¤lv, which was once an ancient border between Norway and VÃÆ'¤stergÃÆ'¶taland (which is now Sweden's territory). Magnus did that, and successfully attacked the VÃÆ'¤stergÃÆ'¶taland and defeated the Swedish forces at the First Battle of Fuxerna. After the successful occupation and expansion of the Norwegian border, Magnus built a wooden castle on KÃÆ'  ¥ llandsÃÆ'¶ Island leaving a force of 300 people to guard it.

When Inge Stenkilsson (Also known as Inge the Younger) heard this, he immediately called leidang (Which is about 3,000 to 3,600 people) and pointed his eyes to regain the newly lost ground.

Battle

Inge arrives at KÃÆ'n llandsÃÆ'¶ during the winter and the waters around the island are completely frozen, giving him the ability to walk across the ice. Before actually invading the castle, Inge offered the entire Norwegian army several times to live and even to save their spoils previously acquired during the invasion if they left the castle. However, Norwegians refused the offer at any time and did not leave the fort. So when the Norwegians for the last time refused the offer, Inge ordered the assault to begin. Both the assailant and the defense immediately begin firing at each other's firing range. While this was the case, the rest of the Swedish army could not actually reach the initial wall of the castle itself as the cemetery had been built around it. So Inge ordered them to fill it with stone and wood. Once this is done, the Swedes collect large wooden beams with anchors mounted at the ends. Using these beams, the Swedes climbed on top of them and entered the fort. Some of them even managed to knock down some parts of the wall. Once inside the fort, they start to burn it. Realizing that the castle sooner or later burned down, the Norwegians surrendered.

King Inge managed to capture the rest of Norwegian troops. However, although the Norwegians reject the possibility of surrender before the siege, King Inge still frees the captured Norwegians after being hit with a stick and removed from their loot. The prisoners then returned to Norway.

Aftermath

The disappearance of the previously conquered fort and land was told to King Magnus Barefoot by Sigurd, who had been one of the garrison leaders and freed by King Inge Stenkilsson after the siege. Magnus was very angry and decided to take revenge, he thus once again invaded VÃÆ'¤stergÃÆ'¶taland. The second invasion ends with Inge successfully ambushing Magnus on the Second Battle of Fuxerna.
