In online marketing, a shopping cart is a piece of ecommerce software on a web server that allows visitors to an Internet site to select items for final purchase, analogous to the term "shopping cart" of the United States. In English English, commonly known as a shopping cart, is almost exclusively shortened on the website to "basket".
This software allows online shopping customers to collect a list of items to purchase, described metaphorically as "putting things in a shopping cart" or "add to cart." Upon checkout, software typically calculates totals for orders, including freight and handling (ie, shipping and packing) and associated taxes, as applicable. The shopping cart also bridges the gap between shopping and purchasing.

History
The development of the web store system took place just after the Internet became a mass media. This is the result of the launch of the Mosaic browser in 1993 and Netscape in 1994. Type
Shopping cart software can be generally categorized into three types of E-commerce software:
- Open source software : The software is released under an open source license and is often free. The merchant must host the software with the web hosting service. It allows users to access and modify the source code of all online stores.
- Licensed software: : The software is downloaded and then installed on the Webserver. This is most often associated with a one time fee, the main advantage of this option is that merchants have a license and therefore can host it on any web server that meets server requirements.
- Hosted services : Software is never downloaded, but is provided by hosted and generally paid providers per month or per year; also known as service application software model (ASP). Some of these services also charge a percentage of sales in addition to monthly fees. These models often have user-selectable standard templates to customize the look and feel of them. Pre-defined templates limit how many users can modify or customize the software with the advantage of having the vendor continue to keep the latest software for security patches as well as adding new features.

The PCI security standard is a regulatory blanket set to protect the security of payment account data. The board that develops and monitors these rules comprises of the industry's leading providers: American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa Inc. Basically, they define best practices for storing, transmitting, and handling sensitive information over the internet.
Visa Inc. can withhold a shopping cart software provider who is responsible for any liability that may arise as a result of non-compliance with Visa rules. For this reason, Visa Inc. may require that online merchants use a shopping cart software provider from a list of validated PCI DSS service providers.
