In project management, schedule is a list of project milestones, activities, and deliverables, usually with the desired start and finish dates. These items are often estimated by other information included in the project schedule of resource allocation, budget, task duration, and dependency relationships and scheduled events. Schedules are typically used in project planning and project portfolio management portions of project management. Elements on the schedule may be closely related to the elements of the work breakdown structure (WBS) terminal, the Statement of work, or the Contract Data Requirements List.

In many industries, such as engineering and construction, the development and maintenance of project schedules is the responsibility of the full time scheduler or the scheduling team, depending on the size and scope of the project. Scheduling techniques are well developed but not consistently applied across industries. Standardization and promotion of scheduling best practices are being pursued by the Association for the Advancement of Cost Techniques (AACE), Project Management Institutions (PMI), and the US Government for acquisitions and accounting purposes.

Project management is not limited to industry; the average person can use it to manage their own lives. Some examples are:

  • House owner renovation project
  • Track all family activity
  • Train a team
  • Planning a vacation
  • Planning a wedding

Some project management software programs provide templates, lists, and sample schedules to help their users create their schedules.

Method

Before a project schedule can be made, the schedule maker must have a work breakdown structure (WBS), estimated effort for each task, and a list of resources with availability for each resource. If these components for the schedule are not available, they can be created by consensus-driven estimation methods such as Wideband Delphi. The reason for this is that the schedule itself is approximate: every date in the schedule is estimated, and if those dates do not have the support of the people who will do the work, the schedule will be inaccurate.

To develop a project schedule, the following things must be resolved:

  • Project scope
  • Order of activities
  • Tasks are grouped into 5 project phases (conception, definition & amp; planning, launch, performance, close)
  • Ticket dependency map
  • Critical path analysis
  • Project milestone

In order for the project schedule to be healthy, the following criteria must be met:

  • The schedule should always be (best weekly work) updated.
  • The EAC value (Estimated in Completion) should be the same as the baseline value.
  • Other efforts should be distributed appropriately among team members (considering the holidays).

The schedule structure may follow and include citations to the structure index or dispatching tasks, using decompositions or templates to describe the activities required to generate the deliverables specified in the WBS.
