Milestones is a tool used in project management to mark certain points throughout the project time. These points may indicate anchors such as the start and end date of the project, the need for an external review or budget input and examination, among others. In many instances, milestones do not affect the duration of a project. Instead, they focus on the great progress points that must be achieved to achieve success.

Using achievements in scheduling

Milestones can add important value to project scheduling. When combined with scheduling methodologies such as Program Evaluation and Engineering Overview (PERT) or the Critical Path Method (CPM), the milestone allows the project manager to more accurately determine whether or not the project is on schedule. By limiting the date associated with the milestone, a critical path can be determined for the main schedule interval alongside the entire project. Slack/float can also be calculated at each time interval. This segmentation of the project schedule into the interval allows earlier indications of problem schedules and better outlook into activities where the solution is critical.

Milestones are often used to monitor progress, but there are limitations to their effectiveness. They usually show progress only on a critical path, and ignore uncritical activities. It is common for resources to be moved from non-critical activities to important activities to ensure that the milestones are fulfilled. This gives the impression that the project is on schedule when actually some activities are being ignored.
