Many Wikipedia pages display a maintenance template that identifies the problem. You may have arrived at this help page after clicking on the link in the maintenance template that says " Learn how and when to delete this template message ".

Maintenance templates are added and removed by volunteers. This help page describes the process for checking and deleting the template.

Ikhtisar

Maintenance templates (or "tags") are not generally deleted automatically. Even if you fix the problem described in the maintenance template, the tag will remain in the article until you or someone else deletes it manually . The removal mechanism is usually as simple as clicking "Edit" at the top of the page or in the section involved (if you are not already in edit mode), deleting the code that generates the template view, leaving the summary edits and saving the page.

It is not okay to delete the maintenance template until the problem marked by the template is fixed first - that is, only once the maintenance tag is no longer valid unless it really does not belong in the first place.

Wikipedia works because of the efforts of volunteers like you, making bold edits to help build this encyclopedia. Fixing the problem and then removing the maintenance template when you are done is important in that effort.

Troubleshooted issues

We do not know which maintenance tag is taking you to this page, and so what specific issues to keep in mind. However, each maintenance template contains links to help pages, policies, guidelines or other relevant pages that provide information about templated issues are placed to mark. You'll also find guidance on some of the more common templates below.

Many common templates solve problems with article citations and references, or lack of them - because reliable sources are the lifeblood of Wikipedia articles and the core of all content policies and Wikipedia guidelines, such as incompetence, verification, neutral point of view , and no original research. But other issues may be flagged, including the tone and style of writing, structure and formatting, lack of links to or from other articles, compliance with Wikipedia style guides and lack of prospects.

Making sure that the problem has been fixed is a condition that you must meet before deleting the template. It does require some effort from you - to understand the problem and how to overcome it.

Example

If the issue marked by the maintenance template is that the article contains no references, the required template used is {{Unreferenced}} - usually placed by the code you'll see when wikitext (source) edits: {{Unreferenced | date = June 2018}} .

It's important to understand that what you see when reading the article, and what you see when editing is, is different. Thus, the above code, only visible when editing the source, generates the view of the so-called 'template' below:

This template contains links, marked with blue words and phrases. These three links to the page that, when explored, provide context and resources for you to understand the why template is placed on the page, and how to solve the article issue being not referenced :

  • "quotes," which links to the Wikipedia content guidelines: Quoting sources;
  • "source", which links to the Wikipedia policy: Verifiability; and
  • "add citations to trusted sources," linked to a help page that provides guidance on the basics of citation referrals.

Any treatment tag that takes you to this help page should also contain a relevant annotation link intended for anything the problem is . Read this explanation and contextual page to learn about the problem and what you need to do to maintain it. Again, some of the more common maintenance templates look discussed in the specific template section below.

When to delete

Maintenance templates are not meant to be in the article permanently. Any user without a conflict of interest may delete the maintenance template under the following circumstances:

  1. When the issue has been adequately addressed;
  2. When determining that the issue has been resolved (possibly by someone else);
  3. If it appears reasonably that the template does not belong when placed or added in error. Discussing the issue with the original placer of the suggested template, even if the user is no longer active, this becomes moot. In any case, if the issue arises debate, look for consensus on the talk page;
  4. When there is consensus on the talk page (or elsewhere) how to solve the marked problem. (We encourage you to consider the consensus location in the edit summary accompanying your deletion, ideally with a link to the location);
  5. When it can be concluded that the template is no longer relevant, as the {{Current}} template appears in an article no longer documenting the current event;
  6. If the maintenance template is the type that requires support but is not fully supported. Some templates related to neutrality, such as {{COI}} (related to conflict of interest guidelines) and {{POV}} (related to policy neutral viewpoints) the tagging editor starts the discussion (generally on the article talk page), to support tag placement. If the bookmark editor fails to do so, or the discussion is inactive, the template may be deleted;
  7. There is currently no consensus for the removal of age-related maintenance templates, with the exception of POV related templates as mentioned above. In this case, some templates are related to binary and unambiguous matters - flag maintenance template issues are clearly required for appropriate articles under Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and therefore continue to be handled (eg, lack of citations). As with POV exceptions, age alone may be relevant if the lack of editing or discussion devoted to this issue can be interpreted as a "silent consensus" form, that the issue is not worth fixing. It always involves matters involving the exercise of judgment and the subjective elements;
  8. Finally, there are times when someone trying to address a maintenance template that marks some basic things may find that the problem can not be really handled. For example, if the article is marked as not having a reliable secondary source quote, written by a third party for the topic, and the user who viewed the maintenance template found that the resource appears nothing , which usually means the article it should be removed. In such a case, it is not so much that the template does not belong and should be removed, but rather that marking the page for maintenance will never solve the more important problem that the page itself is not included on Wikipedia at all.

When not deleting

You do not have to delete the maintenance template if any of the following apply:

  1. You do not understand the problem posed by the template;
  2. The issue has not been resolved;
  3. There is an ongoing activity or discussion with template issues (with POV related templates exceptions);
  4. You have been paid to edit articles or have other conflicts of interest.

Deletion

Have you read the help page carefully and really fixed the problem? Or have you made a decision that the template does not, or no longer applies? Big! Now, to delete the maintenance template:

  1. Click on "edit" or "edit source" at the top of the page, or if the maintenance template is not above but somewhere in the body of the article, you may even use the edit link section;
  2. If you edit wikitext ("source" editing) : Delete template code. The template code you see in this editing mode will usually be in the following form, as in the example above: {{Template name | date = Year Month}} . If you edit using VisualEditor : Click on the template (tag), which will then turn blue. Press the "Delete" button on the template dialog box that will appear;
  3. Exit the descriptive edit summary, for example, "Deleted [ insert template name ] because I fixed the problem;"
  4. Click Publish changes .

There he is. Thank you!

Changing template

Issues flagged by some templates may imply a secondary problem that will persist after you handle the main issue. In such cases, it may be more appropriate to change the template to another applicable after you edit, not just delete it. The reason behind the changes in the template should be resolved in the edit summary.

The case example is the example {{Unreferenced}} used above. It's placed on a page with no references . So, adding only one matching reference that makes the maintenance template inapplicable. However, the changes do not care for a thorough problem from a bad source . In this example, changes to different templates may be appropriate, depending on the type, quality, depth, and how the source is added to fix the problem, such as {{refimprove}} , {{None footnote}} , {{Main resource}} , or one of the many listed on Wikipedia: Message template/Article source.

In contrast, some templates mark a very discrete issue where there is no need to consider switching to another template. For example, if an "orphaned" article - no other article in the main article namespace link - and then after it is taken care of (with the addition of links to other articles), the problem is completely lost and the removal of the tag is not ambiguous.

When marked issues are discussed in parts of the article, but remain in a separate section, clarity can be presented by replacing the template with a section variant, or by using inline cleansing tags, if the template version exists.

In some cases it may be useful to request a review of the removal of a proposed maintenance or deletion template with an editor who initially added it to the article in question.

Custom template guide

This section provides guidance on how to address some of the more general special templates that may have brought you to this help page. More details about the template can be found by following the link to the template itself.

Click "show" on the right to display instructions.

Researching flagged issues

As mentioned earlier, most of the templates contain links to the guide page. Additionally, many templates have documentation that provides more information about issues that are flagged templates, which are displayed when you visit the own template page.

To access the template and thus view its documentation, type it into the search field Template: , followed by the template name , visible when you view the placement in the Edit interface (usually found in the first line of the article ). The first "parameter" is the template name.

For example, if you find this in the Edit interface, {{Unreferenced | date = June 2018}} , then you'll visit the template itself by searching for Template: Unreferenced . The accompanying documentation for all maintenance templates, if any, can be found this way.
