Special K is a brand of breakfast cereal and a food bar manufactured by Kellogg's. Cereal was introduced to the United States in 1955. It was made mainly from grains such as lightly roasted rice, wheat and barley. K is specifically used to be marketed primarily as a low-fat, edible cereal to help a person lose weight.

Special K Challenge
The Special K brand previously advocated a "Special K Challenge." The goal of this challenge is to help someone lose six pounds in two weeks; this loss is achieved by consuming special K special products throughout the day. Diet begins with a serving of each K special cereal, accompanied by 2/3 cups of skim milk and one side of the fruit. The second food from the diet includes either the Special K Protein Meal Bar, the Special K Protein Shake, or other portions of the Special K cereal with 2/3 cups of skimmed milk and one side of the fruit. The third meal of the day can be consumed normally, without any special K limits. Throughout the day, an individual is given two special K snacks, eating one of these special snacks: Special Protein K Food Bar, Special Shake K Prote, Special K Breakfast, Special Granola Protein Barrels, Special K Crackers, Special K Cracker Chips, or K Custom Popcorn. For an extra portion of snack, one can consume fruits and vegetables. During the challenge, drinks can be consumed normally.
Critics of the Special K diet feel that it can make dieters feel hungry because of limited food choices and prevent people from sticking to diet. This diet is criticized for being too low in protein, fiber, vegetables, and fruits. This diet does not include guidance on how to change unhealthy eating habits or lack of exercise and the importance of them to lose weight permanently.

In the United States (US), Special K Original has 120 Cal per 31g cup serving. One serving contains 0.5 g of fat, 23g of carbohydrates, 4g of sugar, and 6g of protein. In England (UK), Special K Original is 17% sugar, which means portion 30g containing 5g sugar.
In the UK, the ad campaign focuses on the results of the research undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Human Sciences at Loughborough University, which requires volunteers who are too fat to replace twice a day with a bowl of cereal. The study found that "after 2 weeks, up to 75% of subjects had a slimmer waist and hips." University scientists conclude that the majority of this is due to fat loss.

In the US, Special K currently comes in fourteen different varieties of Special K Cereal: Original, Chocolatey Delight, Chocolatey Strawberry, Cinnamon Pecan, Red Berries, Vanilla Almond, Fruit & amp; Yogurt, Brown Sugar Gluten Free, Oat & amp; Honey, Honey Granola Touch, Chocolate Almond, Cranberry Granola, Protein, Cinnamon Brown Sugar Crunch Protein, and Apple Cinnamon Crunch (Seasonal).
In the UK & amp; Ireland, Special K comes in ten varieties Special K Cereal: Original, Red Berries, Hazelnut & amp; Almond, Milk Chocolate, Strawberry and Chocolate, Fruits & amp; Nut, Creamy Berry Crunch, Peach & amp; Apricot, and Yoghurty.
Materials
The ingredients in K Special include: wheat bran, grits, rice, wheat gluten, soybean oil, soy protein isolate, whole wheat grain, containing 2% or less sugar, salt, malt flavor, sucralose, natural and artificial flavors, and BHT for freshness.
Vitamins and minerals include vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), niacinamide, reduced iron, vitamin B 6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), vitamin B 1 thiamin hydrochloride), vitamin A (palmitate), vitamin B 2 (riboflavin), folic acid, and vitamin B 12.
Food replacement
In the US, Special K provides food substitutes in two different forms, protein cake and protein shakes.
There are eleven types of Special Food Bar K Protein: Mocha Crunch Protein, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberries, Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Chip, Honey Almond, Walnut Cranberry, Chocolate Caramel, Chocolatey Brownie and Chocolatey Dipped Mint.

K2O Special Protein Water
K2O Special Protein Air Kellogg is a beverage released in September 2006 by Kellogg Company. It is produced in several flavors and has been marketed as a weight control product and weight loss. This product was relaunched in 2007 by Kellogg Company. The product is no longer available. Special K2O Protein Water is available in several flavors, including Strawberry Kiwi, Lemon Twist, and Tropical Blend. Marketed as a low-calorie alternative protein drink, a 16-ounce bottle of K 2 O contains 5 grams of protein, 10% DV of calcium, and 50 calories. This product has also been marketed as a weight loss product, and has been marketed as part of "The Special K Challenge" and "Feeling good never looked better" campaign campaign.
On August 15, 2007, Kellogg's relaunched K2O Special Water Protein with improved graphics and a new, Mixed Berry flavor. In addition to 5 grams of protein, this product is formulated with 5 grams of soluble fiber, from polydextrose, and 20% DV respectively of vitamin B 3 (Niacin), B 6 , and B 12 while keeping 50 calories. This product is also produced in powder form as a mixture of beverages sold in packaged form, which is then added to the water. The powdered product has 30 calories, 5 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein per serving. The powder mixture has also been marketed as a weight control product.

Controversy
Canada
Until summer 2014, Kellogg used a different Special K special formula in Canada than used in the US. With the closing of June 2014 Kellogg's London, Ontario, plant, Canada is now eating K Special made in the US. This formulation is similar to the special K that was introduced in the United States in 1955.
The halted Canadian formula has a distinct flavor that reflects the "taste taste of Canada" (according to Kellogg's Consumer Relations department in Canada). Canadian formulas include rice, wheat gluten, sugar/glucose-fructose, wheat germ, fatty, salt, malt (corn flour, malt barley), vitamins (thiamin hydrochloride, niacinamide, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, d-calcium pantothenate) iron, and BHT are added to the package material to keep the product fresh.
In September 2015, Special K launched a new advertising campaign with the slogan "Own It" during the Emmy Awards broadcast. Kellogg wants a Special K message to be self-empowered, rather than counting calories. Discussing how Canadian women's approach to health management has changed, Natasha Millar from Kellogg Canada says: "His attitude about dieting is not about starvation or calorie counting... the benchmark is achievement, thin is not how he wants to be felt, but not, strong. lose weight, it's about working and building her self, and while her attitude to the body image at one point about looks good, it's now about feeling good. "
Denmark
Denmark has banned the addition of vitamins in Kellogg products since 2004. Danish health workers prohibit cereals to contain additional vitamins because they claim K Kellogg specifically wants to add very high levels of vitamin B 6 , calcium, folic acid, and iron , which will reach toxic levels when eaten daily. Young children are at risk of liver and kidney damage whereas pregnant fetuses may suffer complications.
Netherlands
In an episode that aired on October 15, 2009, the Dutch television show Keuringsdienst van Waarde followed up one of Kellogg K's special nutritional claims, namely the addition of iron. This show provides evidence that iron is not an ionic iron - as happens in natural foods such as spinach - but, in fact, metallic iron. Kellogg telephone help desk employees do not want to discuss their product ingredients in general, claiming they are company secrets; though, in the event, the company was not faced with the findings. Nutritionists at the event agreed that metal iron should not be part of the diet. Metallic iron is speculated to damage organs. After the airing, the Dutch food authorities accused the claims made in TV programs, claiming that there were no health risks. They also oppose the claim that the cereal could contain "grated slices," and replied that iron powder is suitable for human consumption.
The evidence given during the performance follows David Catz's description of the experiment by Dr. Babu George, University of the Sacred Heart, where iron is extracted from grain. As a result of these experiments being published and questions made to manufacturers, some companies have replaced metal iron in their products with iron compounds such as iron (III) phosphate, iron phosphate.
United Kingdom
In May 2013, the buyer did not approve a customized K Special formula, complaining that the cereal flakes were too hard. The reason behind the extra crisis is additional material, barley. Kellogg buyers also complain that cereals are too sweet. The company ensured that the sugar content remained the same (17%), the difference being that some of the sugar was roasted on the outside of the flake, giving it an extra crust.
United States
In late February 2013, the company announced on its website that they are drawing three sizes of the US Special K Red Berries that may contain pieces of glass.
