Paste refers to the method of generating or publishing a publication page that precedes the use of a desktop computer desktop design page now. Done, or ready-camera, the pages are known as mechanical or mechanical art. In the process of offset lithography, the mechanics will be photographed with stat cameras to make the same size negative film for each required platen.

Paste up is dependent on phototypesetting, a process that will produce "cold type" on photographic paper which is usually a long column of text. This mold is often a single column in a narrow (3 in. Or 4 inch) roll of narrow paper.

A professional known as an outboard artist, a layout artist, a mechanical artist, a production artist, or a composer will cut the species into sections and arrange them carefully in multiple columns. For example, a 15 inch strip can be cut into 3 parts 5 inches. Typefaces and other typographic elements are often created and provided separately by the code builder, and submit them to outboard artists to determine their final position on the page.

The adhesive is then applied to the back side of this piece, either by applying a rubber cement with a brush or passing them through a machine that will apply the wax adhesive. The adhesive was intentionally made semi-permanent, allowing strips to be removed and moved around the layout if necessary altered. The piece will be affixed to the board, usually a rigid white paper in which the artist will draw margins and columns of publication, either with a light pencil or non-photo blue ink, a young cyan color that will be ignored by orthochromatic films used to create printing plates in offset lithography. For magazines, newspapers, and other recurring projects, often the board will be printed first in this color.

Other materials ready for cameras such as photostat and line art will also be prepared with adhesive and affixed to the board. Photographs with continuous tones will require halftoning, which will require black or red-imaged photographic paper to be trimmed and placed on the board in lieu of images; in the process of making a negative film for the printing plates, a solid black area will create a clear point on the negative, called a window. The photos will be converted to halftone movies separately and then positioned in this window to complete the page (though this process is usually done by different workers, known as the negative "stripper").

After the page is completed, the board will be attached to the horses and photographed to make a negative, which is then used to make the platen.

Paste is preceded by hot type and cold type technology. Beginning in the 1990s, many newspapers began removing the paste, switching to desktop publishing software that allowed the page to be fully designed on the computer. The software includes QuarkXPress, PageMaker and InDesign.
