The sixth MasterChef Australia series aired on Monday, May 5, 2014 at Network Ten.

The series was won by Brent Owens in the final against Laura Cassai on 28 July 2014. Incidentally, Cassai and third position Emelia Jackson attended the same high school, Siena College.

Changes

In reversal of the previous season, the audition and preliminary stages were broadcast as part of the series, and the weekly theme format was dropped. Series 6 also introduces "apron strength", which gives the wearer a number of advantages and controls in a series of challenges. In the challenge of elimination and pressure tests, contestants wear black aprons with their names in them. The same type of apron is used by contestants who are eliminated at the 8th week of the 5th season of Masterchef Australia. In the previous season, participants who faced elimination or stress tests wore their nameless black aprons in it. In addition, the Immunity Challenge was expanded to have a preliminary round between the three contestants before the winner moved to cook for immunity against professional chefs. Kylie Kwong regularly appears as a mentor during the episode of Immune Challenges in addition to repeated roles as guest judge.

Top 24

The full 24th was revealed on Tuesday, May 6th. On the first Top 24 challenge, it was revealed that the newly recovered Cecilia Vuong from brain surgery due to a ski injury, has resigned from the competition based on medical advice. Georgia Hughes, who became the last person to be knocked out in the Top 50 section of the show, signed in as his replacement. Cecilia eventually competed for a second chance in the eighth series and made it to the top 24, finishing 17th.
