Themes

Gender: Gender roles and gender differences are important to the de la Garza family. This film complicates the role expected by the tradition of Tita, Getrudis, and Rosaura to be played. Tita, the mother-caregiver, breaks tradition; Gertrudis embodies the duality of men and women; and Rosaura, a traditional female rulers, failed to fulfill it. Rosaura is trying to be a traditional woman. He married his brother Tita, a true love, Pedro, and adopted the role of wife. His main job is to cook, clean, and care for his children. The problem is she can not cook, can not clean, and can not breastfeed her own baby. Next to bend the gender is Gertrudis, the descendant of the dark relationship between Mama Elena and her lover. We know early on that Gertrudis does not fit into prints like women. He is a tomboy, openly disagreeing with his mother and his traditional values. She pushes Tita to Pedro's court even though she's married to their sister. When Tita's emotions enter the rose petal plate she serves the family for dinner, Gertrudis eats and becomes so aroused that her body starts to steam. He ran to the latrine, burned it, and left the house behind a horse driven by a Mexican Revolutionary soldier. When Gertrudis mysteriously returns one night, we learn that he is a soldier who fought in the Revolution. Married to a man on a horse, he now orders his husband's army. Tita is the opposite of her sister. She is the cook and the family cook. Everyone loves his cooking and Tita miraculously serves as a baby nurse Rosaura, because Rosaura can not produce milk. (When Pedro and Rosaura moved out, the baby died because Rosaura could not take care of him.) Different gender roles give the depth and significance of each character, highlighting the differences that occur in each sister. In doing so, the film features powerful women who break the barriers and redefine what it means to be a woman.

Tradition is the center of this movie. Tita, Gertrudis and the Mexican Revolution itself all against it. The main conflict of the film is a family tradition that forbids the youngest daughter from marrying so that she will be free to take care of her mother. This requirement formed a battle between Tita and her mother, Mama Elena. Tita struggles to live her own life; Mama Elena had a fight to keep Tita at home. So intense was Mama Elena's desire to uphold the tradition that she ordered her eldest daughter, Rosaura, to marry Pedro, a true love of Tita. Gertrudis, the middle child, and the descendant of the dark relationship between Mama Elena and her boyfriend, escaped from home and joined those who struggled to end the dictatorship and corruption that plagued Mexican commoners. Bored with the tradition that only wealthy landowners possess wealth and power, people rebel, fighting for workers on the ground. The battle of Gertrudis against the government is parallel to the battle between Tita and Elena. Both are fighting for change. In the war, Gertrudis became the leader of an all-male rebel group. The two men listened and respected him. Gertrudis challenges tradition and becomes a successful leader. Tita's challenge to tradition will also work and marks a successful change for Mexico.

Breaking Tradition: While tradition works well to help pass family habits or even cultural habits, often traditions can often be seen negatively and tear families and communities apart because it can persecute people in a society that deviate from tradition. Mexican culture has in fact long been declared this forced marriage rule in which women's opinions are left unaccepted, and as a result these traditions lead to the persecution of women. The persecution also occurs in the family of de la Garza where family tradition prevents the main character, Tita, from marrying Pedro because of the rule that the second daughter should not marry. Thus, breaking this particular tradition is the main theme in the film. One way this is represented in the film is through Mama Elena's character as an oppressive force and tyranny for Tita. His character shows how corrupt traditions such as forced marriages prevent other people and tear groups apart as Mama Elena did to Tita to prevent her from marrying Pedro. However, with the help of Tita's magical cuisine that ultimately destroys a tradition-free family, Tita and his sister Gertrudis not only break the gender barriers and roles in their society but also help build traditions to begin treating each other. same.
