External links and references are two important elements of Wikipedia that sometimes find problems for newcomers. This page is designed to cover only the technical aspects of linking and referencing; it is important that editors also familiarize themselves with Wikipedia: External links, Wikipedia: Reliable sources and Wikipedia: Quoting sources, as well as other Wikipedia policies on external links and references.

Video Help:External links and references

External links

To place external links in an article, you put a link in single brackets like this:

[URL text-you-want-to-show ]

Sebagai contoh,

will be displayed as

Google

Before adding external links to articles, you should check Wikipedia: External links so you can learn about Wikipedia policies about external links.

References

When adding references to articles, most editors use footnotes that look like this :. If you click on a footnote, you will be taken to a section, usually at the bottom of the page, where you can see information about the source quoted.

Here are some basic cites:
  1. How to format a quote : Put all citations in the & lt; ref & gt; and & lt;/ref & gt;. This allows them to be automatically included in the reference list. Try to include any authors, dates and titles you quote. For books and magazines, you should also include page numbers and ISBNs. Here's an example taken from the Help page: References for beginners: & lt; ref & gt; Plunkett, John. [http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,14173,1601858,00.html "Sorrell accuses Murdoch of panic"], '' [[The Guardian]] '', London, October 27, 2005 Retrieved October 28, 2005. & lt;/ref & gt; This will appear in the "References" section of the article as: Plunkett, John. "Sorrell accused Murdoch of frantically buying," The Guardian , London, October 27, 2005. Retrieved on October 28, 2005.
  2. Template templates : There are many templates for making easier quotes, like {{cite web}} and {{cite news}}. The list can be found on Wikipedia: Template quote # Example. There is also a tool called Reference generator that you can use. If you want to use the template for the above source, you will use {{cite news}}, which will be populated like this: & lt; ref & gt; {{cite news | title = Sorrell accused Murdoch of panic buying | first = Plunkett | last = John | url = http://media.guardian.co.uk/site/story/0,14173,1601858,00.html | newspaper = The Guardian | publisher = Guardian Media Group | location = London | date = October 27, 2005 | accessdate = October 28, 2005}} & lt;/ref & gt; . It will appear in the "reference" section as: John, Plunkett (October 27, 2005). "Sorrell accused Murdoch of frantically buying". The Guardian . London: Guardian Media Group . Retrieved October 28 2005 . . There are some template parameters that have not been filled. For a complete list of parameters for this template, see the template.
  3. Where to place references : for more details about when to enter a reference, see WP: CITE. When you want to cite a source, place the citation right after the information quoted. If you quote a sentence, place a reference after period. More beautiful like that.
  4. Use references more than once : If you want to use references more than once, the first time you use them, type a quote like this: & lt; ref name = "name" & gt; paste reference here & lt;/ref & gt; . Then, when you want to quote the source again, just type & lt; ref name = "name"/& gt; where you want to quote it.
  5. Reference list : You can verify all references entered between & lt; ref & gt; and & lt;/ref & gt; is automatically inserted into the "References" section. This helps ton , because this section automatically assigns numbers and everything. To do this, you can put {{Reflist}} in the "References" section. You can put & lt; reference/& gt; there instead, if you want.

If all this is a bit confusing, you can use this useful tool when you learn how to make a quote by hand. It has a form that you fill with information from a web page or news and it will generate a quote for you.

Below are some examples of quotations (using the examples outlined above) and the list of sample references below, except this time, they will be displayed as they do in the article. If you look at the reference list, next to reference 1, it says b . Click one of the letters beside the quotation. a will take you to the first place reference 1 cited. Likewise, b will take you to the second place reference 1 cited. Clicking on the ^ next to reference 2 will take you to where reference 2 is quoted.

Example of quoted text

John Smith forty-three.

John Plunkett says this, that, and then some in an article in the Guardian. John Smith agrees with what John Plunkett says.
