Edit filter

Do we really want to include happy news about the edit filter? Very low percentages of administrators use edit filters directly, and even between them, most (all?) Will not even see changes. It does not require any action on their part. ~ Rob 13 Talk 03:12, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks very much to all editors involved in writing this bulletin - I really appreciate the effort and the results. I always try to keep up with policy and technology changes, but need to keep an eye on VPT, ANI, CENT, the open Arbcom case, and so on and so forth. In addition, monitoring these pages takes a long time, I often lose half of the changes I'm interested in, so this quick monthly summary is highly appreciated. Same. I am not active here as it used to be and this newsletter is very helpful, thank you very much, all who helped do it... Lar: t/c 15:52, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Cookie Block

Given how easy it is to clean cookies (and even supercookies also discuss settings) and the need to explain why people are blocked, (thus telling them about blocking cookies) it will not take long for persistent troublemakers to find their way around. I think this is actually a missed opportunity. If giving cookies to people when blocked, and then entering the cookie information in the check log, it will be a powerful new tool to combat dolls. Although it will not be kept secret, it may be unknown to most sockmasters, unlike blocking, where else, we need to explain regularly how potentially innocent editors are automatically blocked. I think the cookie block is mostly intended for "casual spoils" using mobile networks or realizing that they can turn on and off their routers to receive new outgoing IPs. These people are the most likely to know how the cookie mechanism detects them, especially if we can just sweep this under "You are automatically blocked because your system was recently used for vandalism" carpets without explaining the actual mechanics in the workplace. The whole cookie mechanism is basically just security through obscurity, so I doubt that logging in checks will prove to be an effective puppet dalang counter in the long run.
The cookie block is not likely to be a magic bullet that solves all vandalism issues, but may prove to be quite effective against a group of special riders who vandalize and then try to have fun that they can not be blocked. If the edit filter log is any indication it seems that the editors tend to try the same edits several times before losing interest if they can not get through it. With any luck, the cookie block will have the same effect when an editor knows that the router reset is not a free card from prison anymore. This is with my understanding of it. This is just another layer of abuse prevention to help prevent "school troublemakers" instead of sophisticated abusers with WP: LTA pages. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:47, 3 March 2017 (UTC)
