History

Ultimaker BV is a Dutch 3D printer company founded in 2011 by Martijn Elserman, Erik de Bruijn, and Siert Wijnia. Ultimaker started selling their products in May 2011. The company's foundation was placed at ProtoSpace Utrecht where Wijnia hosted two workshops to build the Darwin RepRap 3D printer. The two Beta workshops are held in ProtoSpace Utrecht from September and December 2010, each consisting of 10 Monday nights. Erik de Bruijn and Martijn Elserman helped in the workshops. Frustration due to their inability to make Darwin's design work leads to inspiration to create their own designs. Instead of adhering to the RepRap principle that their printers should be able to print their own parts, they designed their printers to build the bulk of the laser piece of plywood, which could produce orders faster than the parts printed at the time. Their first prototype wears the name "Ultimaker protobox" but the newer prototype is simply titled "Ultimaker". In March 2011, Ultimaker ltd. released their first full product, "Ultimaker" (renamed in 2013 to "Original Ultimaker") under the Creative Commons BY-NC license. The Ultimaker Original is distributed as a Do It Yourself package that is entertained by hobbies and technicians. It can print files up to 21 x 21 x 20.5 cm at a maximum resolution of 20 microns. Users start sharing experiences and join fast-growing communities.

Software

Their first software runs under a modified version of Replicator-G. They change this then to Cura as more and more users start using this software supporting the G-Replicator, which was originally produced with Makerbot in mind. When the main developer for Cura started working for Ultimaker, Cura became the ultimate software product for Ultimaker. Cura is quickly becoming a fan favorite of 3D print. The YouMagine survey found that 58% of users surveyed used Cura, compared to 23% using Slic3r. On September 26, 2017 the company announced that Cura had reached one million users. This announcement was made on TCT show.

Products

Unlike the RepRap project, Ultimaker does not focus on the ultimate goal of self-replication. Ultimaker printers are designed to create high quality prints. Ultimaker sells the Original Ultimaker family as a DIY kit and the Ultimaker family 2 and 3 as a pre-assembled machine. One of the distinctive properties of Ultimaker printers is that vertical motion is done by moving the print platform, not the nozzle.

Original Ultimaker

Ultimaker Original is the predecessor of Ultimaker 2 and released a few months after the company was founded. The Original Ultimaker can be modified according to user preferences. In 2012, Ultimaker Original was awarded the fastest and most Accurate 3D printer available by MAKE Magazine.

Ultimaker 2

Ultimaker 2 is the Ultimaker Original successor and released in September 2013. The MAKE magazine classifies Ultimaker 2 as "the best open architecture 3D architect of 2014" and named it runner-up in the "Prosumer FFF" category.

Otherwise it is similar to the usual Ultimaker 2 except for the higher 10cm build volume and the frame is somewhat larger.

Ultimaker 3 and Ultimaker 3 Extended

Ultimaker 3 was released on October 18, 2016 and introduced a professional dual 3D extrusion printing for desktop. This is called the best 3D printer for 2017 by All3DP.

Ultimaker S5

The S5 Ultimaker was introduced in April 2018. It increases the build area of the X axis while maintaining the build area of the Z axis and introduces a feeder system that stops when the material runs out and resumes when new material is loaded.

Ultimaker Material

The 3D Ultimaker printers currently print well using company-branded filaments made of polypropylene (PP), polyvinyl acetate (PVA), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), PLA Tough, Copolyester (CPE), Nylon, Polycarbonate, Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU 95A) and water-soluble PVA or compatible third-party materials. The breakaway material was developed and released in 2017 to support multi-extrusion printing and reduce post-processing time.
