Strawberry and Chocolate (In Spanish: Fresa y chocolate ) is an internationally produced film directed by TomÃÆ'¡s GutiÃÆ' Â © rrez Alea and Juan Carlos TabÃÆ'o, based on the short story "The Wolf, The Forest and the New Man" (In Spanish, El Lobo, el bosque y el hombre nuevo ) written by Senel Paz in 1990. Senel Paz also wrote the screenplay for the film.

Plot
This story took place in Havana, Cuba in 1979. David (Vladimir Cruz), rejected by Vivian, who married older and richer men. He revealed that he was a student when he met Diego (Jorge PerugorrÃÆ'a), a gay artist who was unhappy with the Castro regime's attitude towards the LGBT community as well as the censored cultural conceptualization. David's homophobic classmate Miguel (Francisco Gattorno), plans to use David to spy on Diego, someone they perceive to be deviant and dangerous to the Communists; Diego, on his part, started a friendship with sexual intentions, but David for the most part refused his progress.
Although David initially underestimated the idea of ​​being a "baby" of Diego, he decided to do so to pass the information back to Miguel. Both formed a weak friendship in the spy process, and David explained that their relationship would be platonic. Nancy, a "vigil" who lives on top of Diego, attempted suicide when David arrived one day, and he finally donated blood so he could recover. When David spends more time with Diego, he argues with him about Communism, sexuality, and what is truly revolutionary. After continuing to report their activities to Miguel, David finally ended up exploding, telling Miguel that Diego has principles despite his sexuality. Vivian tries to reconnect with David and starts having an affair, but eventually he refuses the money. David started showing more affection for Diego, bought him flowers and posted Marxist icons in Diego's room, and let him read the manuscript.
In the side plot, Diego and Germany, artist painter and sexual partner, can not show their full collection of work. In the process both of them fell and Diego sent an angry letter to the curator of the Cuban museum. This leads to his dismissal, and the inability to seek work outside of manual labor because of his government blacklist. Diego tells this to Nancy, who has developed romantic interest in David. In a friendly cue for both sides, he decides to arrange Nancy and David, and David loses her virginity to Nancy. In the days that followed, Miguel came to Diego's apartment, accusing David of being a homosexual.
Diego finally decided to leave the country, but could not keep it a secret from David. He confesses his love for David, and reveals the fact that Diego does not deny the rumors that he in relationship with David caused David's false "outing" as a gay man. Despite this, David hugged Diego with a hug, leaving their ambiguous future status.

Reception
The Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert commented that "nothing happened as we expected. Strawberry and Chocolate is not a movie about seduction, but about the seduction of the mind. more interested in politics than sex - unless you count Sexuality, for being homosexual in Cuba is making an anti-authoritarian statement whether you intend or not. "
The title refers to a comment made by Diego who immediately proves to David that Diego is gay when in Havana's Coppelia (ice cream) he chooses strawberry ice cream even though chocolate (much more popular) is available.
