Responsive web design ( RWD ) is a web design approach that makes web pages display well across devices and screen or window sizes. Recent work also considers the proximity of viewers as part of the display context as an extension to RWD. Content, design, and performance are required across all devices to ensure usability and satisfaction.

A site designed with RWD customizes the layout with a viewing environment using fluid, proportion-based grids, flexible images, and CSS3 media queries, an extension of the @media rule, in the following ways:
