Online Resource Parks for Teachers and Students ( PORTS ) is a free program that connects California State Parks to California K-12 public schools. PORTS allows state park guards to make live presentations to classrooms from parks across the country through video conferencing. The program also provides a complete study unit that complements presentations in accordance with California academic content standards.

Study unit

Each study unit includes one or more videoconferences between rangers and students and also includes resources such as lesson plans, digital images and videos, historic documents, and other items. PORTS offers study units in each of the following areas:

  • Tidepools: served from Crystal Cove State Park. Subject area: Science- Biology and Ecology.
  • Paleontology: presented from Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Subject area: biology and earth sciences.
  • Elephant seal: presented from AÃÆ' Â ± o Nuevo State Reserve. Subject area: evolution, structure, and function on the northern elephant seal.
  • Government: presented from California State Capitol. Subject area: US history and geography: growth and conflict.

Technology

PORTS contains two major technological components: an online lesson plan and video conferencing.

1. Online lesson plan: To access the online lesson plan, the following products are required:

  • Microsoft Windows or Macintosh computers are connected to the internet
  • Web browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari
  • Windows Media Player for Windows or Macintosh
  • Apple QuickTime for Windows or Macintosh
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Powerpoint
  • Adobe Reader for Windows or Macintosh
  • Digital camera
  • TV or LCD projector

2. Videoconferencing: To utilize the PORTS video conferencing program, the following products are required:

  • High-speed Internet
  • Videoconferencing Unit
  • TV or LCD projector

PORTS often lend equipment to schools that do not have access to any of the above items.

PORTS operates at K-12 High Speed ​​Network (HSN) California. Because many programs require classrooms to have the capacity to receive information at speeds of up to 300 kilobytes per second, and some even require classrooms to be able to receive information at 768 KB per second or higher, it is recommended that classrooms become connected to HSN if they wish participate in this program. However, it is possible to use PORTS without connecting to HSN.

PORTS video streaming files require that the classroom receive information at speeds of 300 KB per second or higher. They also need a classroom to install Windows Media Player. To utilize the PORTS video conferencing program, the classroom must have a connection speed of at least 384 KB per second. Some programs (eg - programs from remote locations, or programs that include multiple moves) may require higher speeds.
