microsite is an individual web page or a small group of pages intended to function as a separate entity within an existing website or to complement offline activity. The main microsite landing page can have its own domain name or subdomain.

Usage

Microsites are typically used in web design to add specialized information groups both editorial and commercial. These sites may be linked to the main site or not or taken entirely from the site server when the site is used for a temporary purpose. The main difference between the microsite versus the parent site is its purpose and compactness compared to that of the wider microsite whole web site.

Microsites used for editorial purposes may be pages or clusters of pages that, for example, may contain information about vacations, events or similar items that provide more detailed information than the general content area a site can provide. A community organization may have its primary site with all basic organizational information, but creates a separate temporary microsite to inform you about certain events, events or similar.

Often, microsites will be used for editorial purposes by commercial businesses to add editorial value. For example, a party merchant retailer can create a microsite with editorial content about Halloween history or holidays or other events. The commercial purpose of the microsite editorial, (excluding promoting product sales), can include adding value to site visitors for branding purposes as well as providing editorial content and keywords that enable greater opportunities of search engine inclusion. Typically, microsites do not contain web applications.

Microsites can be used for pure commercial purposes to create in-depth information about a particular product, service or as editorial support of a particular product, such as describing new technologies. Car manufacturers, for example, can present new hybrid vehicles and support sales presentations with special microsites to explain hybrid technology.

With the prevalence of keyword contextual advertising (often referred to as pay per click or PPC), microsites can be tailor-made to carry such contextual ads. Or with the same tactics, they are created to specifically bring content-specific topics, rich in keywords with the intention of having search engines rank them greatly when search engine users search for content topics.

A microsite, however, will most likely not lower the cost of PPC, as it will most likely not improve the Quality Score. There are nine factors that go into Quality Score, one of which is landing page quality (how relevant the content is, transparent, and easy navigation). This factor does not look at the entire website (which can be a common misconception of Quality Score), only the pages selected to ask people for their search queries. Thus it does not matter if the website includes a wide spectrum of items, or just one, it's important if the one-page content is specific to that person's search. And considering the eight other factors that go into Quality Score, the main website should usually produce a better Quality Score than the microsite.

Criticism

Microsites have been criticized by security expert Rich Baldry who claims they are causing confusion, wastage of money, and can damage reputation.

When a specific destination domain for the campaign microsites appears, it becomes [...] confusing. At best, people may ignore the microsite domain, keeping themselves safe but making dollar marketing a waste. At worst, the protection and reputation offered by the use of known domains is lost and people end up infected as they follow unknown domains.
