Plot

Vasanth (Aari) is an artist working on a story about 'Mayavanam', a haunted forest. On the birthday of his friend, he tells a story involving 'Maya', an evil spirit. He tells him about how a person experiences cold and watches the spirit descend on them when someone says "Maya! Your daughter is not with me" three times. To mock Vasanth, the friend said the same thing three times, and a similar figure entered the room. He falls back in fear, but the figure reveals himself as his wife; it was just a birthday surprise. The next day, Vasanth shows photographs taken by him during the Maya entrance dressed to his boss, Ram Prasad (Amzath Khan) and Madan (Utay Mahesh), episode writer at Mayavanam. Ram shows a smoky form near them and warns him about it. She tells him about a book, Asylum by Kate , detailing the lives of the mentally ill people who are forced into a mental hospital and experimenting. Madhan then tells the story of a prisoner like that, a woman named Maya Matthews, who was taken to a mental hospital after killing her husband and forced to surrender her newborn daughter to the authorities in the asylum. He fell to his death from the building, with an expensive ring rumored to be in his body, and buried in the base of asylum (Mayavanam), where his vengeful spirit is now believed to be exploring. Later, Madhan's friend and Vasanth - the car driver - visited Mayavanam to write about his final episode. Madhan disappears, and after escaping from Mayavanam somehow, Vasanth's friend meets with a terrible death immediately, by falling off a building like Maya, who spews Vasanth to start an investigation of Mayavanam.

In alternating scenes, Apsara (Nayantara) is a single mom who struggles to make ends meet by working in a movie commercial. She is separated from her husband Arjun who is an actor, and lives with her friend Swathi (Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli) who works in a movie production house, RK Studios. After the movie poster, Irul, which Swathi is currently working on to the wall of the house, Apsara experiences strange things happening inside the house. He did not really think about it because he was always preoccupied with the loans he took from a local gangster. She keeps visiting her home demanding cash and she continues to dismiss her by saying that the check she's entitled to, after acting in another movie before, continues to bounce. Out of frustration, he went to visit the advertising company where he learned that the producer had taken part in the contest arranged by the Swathi company. The contest is a promotional advertisement for Irul, where contestants are awarded INR5 lakh if they manage to watch a horror movie alone at night without showing any signs of fear. He caught the car and went to the studio. The scene alternated with Vasanth went to Mayavanam and the film's producer watched the movie. When he reached the studio, the producer was dead and taken on a stretcher to an ambulance. Director Irul has witnessed the strange death of an ad film producer while watching a movie, but admitted to the police it was a heart attack.

All lost and he was emotionally tortured by the money-giver, Apsara decided to watch Irul, to make ends meet. Swathi begs him not to, fear for the life of Apsara and hopes the director supports him, he also begs him, but the director supports Apsara even though he knows what can happen later. The film started playing, and it was revealed that Vasanth's side of the story is Irul's film. When Apsara continues to watch, he is mysteriously teleported into the movie. Ram and Kate, the writer, are shown to have a man dig up the ground on the Mayavanam grounds, looking for an expensive ring that the dead Maya said. Vasanth was caught by Kate and held at the point of the gun as they searched for the ring. Apsara is caught as well, and when they finally find Maya's coffin, a visible figure appears behind Kate and Ram, and all hell breaks out. Soon Apsara and Vasanth were separated from the group, and pursued by ghosts. They fall into a big ditch and Vasanth helps him out, while he stays inside. He ran away and heard the baby cry. He goes looking for it, when he is shot by Shankar. After falling, she is held by Maya who cries in anger and kills Shankar. Then it was revealed that Maya was Apsara's mother. He wakes up in the theater, with his mother's diary on his lap, and the doll he used to play, when he was a baby. It is later revealed that the person who plays Vasanth in this movie is Arjun himself and the producer of the film ad that died before, is the one who sent Maya to the asylum and took his ring.

The last scene shows Apsara reuniting with her husband and now acting in a movie about Maya directed by the same director as Irul. When the shooting begins, Maya's first scene sits in a wheelchair, Arjun finds Apsara standing in the corner while everyone assumes that she is the person sitting in a wheelchair. The film ends with Maya's spirit of killing the director and the Maya ring falls from his pocket. After that Maya returns and the screen cuts black.
