Liquid latex is often used for special make-up and body painting applications. Liquid latex contains about one third of latex, two thirds water (plus less than one percent of ammonia to keep latex from damage and to control the pH of the solution). Liquid latex is sold in jars ranging from 2 oz. through gallon jugs and consistency similar to latex house paint. A four-ounce needle can usually cover an average-sized body. This is usually applied using a disposable sponge and takes about five to ten minutes to dry depending on how thick it is applied. Because it dries it freezes into a consistency of rubber and in the process ultimately shrinks by about three percent.

As the sap dries it becomes very sticky and will stick to itself if it is not accidentally folded. Most manufacturers offer a slick spray for latex after dry to remove stickiness that allows limb movement of the model. Alternatively, the shimmer powder can be sprinkled over dry liquid latex to create a metallic effect. One of the advantages to overcoming liquid latex is that it can serve as a glue to attach something to the paint, like a zipper.

Unlike most body paint and other faces, the latex liquid is removed by peeling it because the water does not turn it back on. Peeling the latex from the skin can be painful for some people and indeed tend to pull body hair like waxing. Although latex is non-toxic, some people may have an allergic reaction. The most severe occurs immediately and is categorized as a direct hypersensitivity reaction. Cosmetic liquid latex contains about 0.3% ammonia to increase shelf life. Handicrafts and making latex prints can contain more than double this amount and as a result have a much stronger odor. Smoke from ammonia in latex liquids can irritate the eyes when used as a special effect of makeup on the face. For this reason it is recommended that the latex liquid be left out for several minutes before being applied in this way. Appropriate latex liquid safety guidelines should be followed before the use of liquid latex cosmetics.

Latex is a natural material derived from a rubber tree in the form of liquid milk. There are thousands of plant species that produce different types of latex, including Chicle trees that produce raw materials for producing rubber materials in chewing gum. Unlike some rubber compounds, rubber tree sap is not toxic either in liquid or solid form, and therefore can be found in many products such as surgical gloves, condoms and body paint. Liquid latex is naturally clean and then dries to a translucent amber color. Manufacturers add pigments to the product to give a choice of opaque paint colors of some colors. The paint color in the jar may initially look chalky, but as it dries it develops into a rich color (gray to black for example). Additional acrylic paints can be mixed with liquid latex solution for special colors but may not be suitable for cosmetic applications.

Liquid latex used for special effects make-up projects such as scars and scratches incorporate skin-colored latex applied to the skin and then built using materials such as tissue paper and cotton.
