Life Savers are American hard ring shaped brands. A range of mint and fruit flavors are known for their distinctive packaging, which comes in a roll of aluminum paper wrapped in paper.
The candy producer Clarence Crane of Garrettsville, Ohio, (the father of poet Hart Crane) discovered the brand in 1912 as a "summer candy" that can withstand heat better than chocolate. The name of the candy comes from its resemblance to the life preserver form used to save the fallen person from the boat.
After registering the trademark, Crane sold the rights to Pep-O-Mint peppermint candy to Edward John Noble for $ 2,900. Instead of using cardboard rolls, which were not very successful, Noble created a tin-foil wrapper to keep the mint fresh. Noble founded Life Savers and Candy Company in 1913 and significantly expanded the market for products by installing Life Savers monitors next to the cashier's restaurant and grocery store. He also encourages the owners of the company to always give nickel customers in their change to drive the sale of $ 0.05 Life Savers. The slogan "Still only 5 cents" helps Life Savers become a favorite snack for children with strict perks. Since then, many flavors of Savory Life have been produced. Life Savers was first created in 1912 by Clarence Crane, a Cleveland candy maker, Ohio (and the father of renowned poet Hart Crane). Crane develops a hard candy line but has no space or machine to make it. He contracted with pill manufacturers to suppress mint form.
In 1913, Crane sold the formula for his Life Savers candy to Edward Noble of Gouverneur, New York for $ 2,900. Noble started his own candy company and started producing and selling candies known as Pep-O-Mint Life Savers. He also began packing the candy into a roll wrapped in tin foil to prevent it from becoming stale. This process was done by hand until 1919 when the machine was developed by Edward Noble's brother, Robert Peckham Noble, to streamline the process.
Robert is an engineer with an educated Purdue. He took his sister's entrepreneurial vision and designed and built the necessary manufacturing facilities to expand the company. The main manufacturing plant for Life Savers is located in Port Chester, New York, a local landmark filled with Life Savers entertaining motifs into the cornice. Robert led the company as Chief Executive Officer and major shareholder for more than 40 years, until selling the company in the late 1950s.
In 1919, six other flavors (Wint-O-Green, Cl-O-Ve, Lic-O-Rice, Cinn-O-Mon, Vi-O-Let and Choc-O-Late) have been developed, and this remains a flavor standard until the late 1920s. In 1920, a new flavor called Malt-O-Milk was introduced. This feeling is received so badly that it is stopped after several years. In 1925, tin foil was replaced with aluminum foil.
Noble promotes candy at the cashiers of saloons, cigar stores, drugstores, barbershop shops, and restaurants. He has a candy that is placed, at a price of five cents, near the cash register.
In 1921, the company began to produce solid drops. In 1925, the technology was upgraded to allow holes in the center of fruit candy. It was introduced as a "fruit drop with a hole" and comes in Orange, Lemon and Lime, each of which is packaged in their own separate rolls. In contrast to the opaque white candy previously produced by the company, this new candy is shaped like a crystal. This new sense quickly became popular in the community. Four new flavors are quickly introduced, ie, aniseed, butter rum, cola and root beer, which are made with a clear fruit drop style. It does not prove as popular as the three original fruit flavors fall. In 1931, Life Savers "Cough Drop" was introduced with menthol but it did not work. In 1931, a roll of pineapple and cherry fruit was also introduced. As the public response proved positive for this, a range of new mints, called Cryst-O-Mint, were made in a similar crystalline-like style introduced in 1932. In 1935, the classic "Five-Flavor" rolls were introduced, offering a choice of five different flavors (pineapple, lime, orange, cherry, and lemon) on each roll. This series of flavors did not change for almost 70 years, until 2003, when three of the flavors were replaced in the United States, making pineapple rolls, cherries, raspberries, watermelons and blackberries. However, orange was then reintroduced and the blackberry was dropped. The original five-flavor formation is still sold in Canada. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, four new mint flavors were introduced: Molas-O-Mint, Spear-O-Mint, Choc-O-Mint and Stik-O-Pep.
During the Second World War, other candy producers donated their sugar rations to keep Life Savers in production so that the little candy can be shared with the Armed Forces as a pleasant reminder of life at home. As soon as the war ended, the manufacturing license was withdrawn. In 1947, the UK-based Rowntree's - previously licensed to make Life Savers - began to produce a similar product called Polo mint.
In 1981, Nabisco Brands Inc. acquired Life Savers from E.R. Squibb Corporation. A number of early mint flavors, including Cl-O-Ve, Vi-O-Let, Lic-O-Rice and Cinn-O-Mon were halted due to poor sales. Nabisco introduces new Cinnamon flavors ("Hot Cin-O-Mon") as a clear-cut fruit candy type. This replaces the recently-discontinued Cinn-O-Mon mint white flavor. Other original mint flavor has been retired. A number of other flavors were also quickly stopped, after Nabisco took over, to make the business more profitable. In 2004, US Life Savers business was acquired by Wrigley's. Wrigley's introduces two new mint flavors (for the first time in over sixty years) in 2006: Orange Mint and Sweet Mint. They also revive some early mint flavors (like Wint-O-Green).
Life Savers production was based in Holland, Michigan, until 2002 when it moved to Montreal, QuÃÆ' Â © bec, Canada. The significantly lower sugar prices in the country are the reason behind the move. Company headquarters in Port Chester, New York, where Life Savers were made from 1920 to 1984, are very different. Although it has been converted into an apartment, it still retains some of the Lifesavers signs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
