Air pressure is changed by removing the valve stem and filling it with air or letting the ball deflate. It is most commonly used in physical therapy, athletic exercise and exercise. It can also be used for weight training. The ball, although often referred to as the Swiss ball , is also known by a number of different names, including ball balance , ball born, body ball , balls, fitness ball , gym ball , gymnastics , physio ball , ball pilates , navy mine, Pezzi ball , stability ball , Swedish ball , ball therapy , or yoga ball .

History

The physical object known as the "Swiss Ball" was developed in 1963 by Aquilino Cosani , an Italian plastic manufacturer. He perfected the printing process of large puncture-resistant plastic balls. The balls, later known as the "Pezzi ball", were first used in a newborn and infant treatment program by Mary Quinton, a British physiotherapist working in Switzerland. Then, Dr. Susanne Klein-Vogelbach, director of the School of Physical Therapy in Basel, Switzerland, integrates the use of ball practice as a physical therapy for neurodevelopmental care. Based on the concept of "functional kinetics", Klein-Vogelbach advocates the use of ball techniques to treat adults with orthopedic or medical problems. The term "Swiss Ball" was used when American physical therapists started using the technique in North America after witnessing its benefits in Switzerland. From their development as physical therapy in a clinical setting, the exercise is now used in athletic training, as part of a general fitness routine and incorporation in alternative exercises such as yoga and Pilates.

in 2012, Neil Whyte completed a record for the fastest time of 10 Swiss balls having surged in 8.31 seconds. The record for the furthest jump between two Swiss balls was also made by Neil at a distance of 2.3 meters in 2012

Benefits

The main benefit of exercise with an exercise ball compared to direct practice on a harsh flat surface is that the body responds to the ball's instability to stay balanced, attracting more muscle. The muscles become stronger over time to maintain balance. Most often, the core muscles of the body - abdominal muscles and back muscles - are the focus of the exercise ball training program.

The main benefit of using an unstable surface is the ability to recruit more muscle units without the need to increase the total load. The greatest benefit of moving the exercise to an unstable surface is achieving greater activation of the core muscles, such as curled or push-up exercises done on an exercise ball. The unstable surface increases the activation of the rectus abdominus and allows greater activity per workout when compared to a stable surface. Exercises such as curling on exercise balls produce more electromyography (EMG) activity compared to exercises on a stable platform. Performing standard exercises, such as push-ups, on unstable surfaces can be used to increase the activation of core stem stabilizers and in turn provide enhanced trunk strength and greater resistance to injury.

Other uses

Fitness Experts and some doctors also recommend sitting on an exercise ball instead of an office chair.

It is based on the theory that the abdominal and back muscles are constantly moving and active to maintain proper posture and balance on the ball. There is no scientific evidence about the benefits that occur by just sitting without additional exercise. However, some people warn against using the Swiss ball as a seat due to ergonomic considerations or biomechanical reasons.

This large plastic ball, known as the "birth ball", can also be used during labor to help the fetal head fall into the pelvis. Sitting in an upright position will also help position the fetus and be more comfortable for women. Sitting on a ball with your hands resting on a bed, table or strong object to support and swing your hips gently can help women during contractions and help natural physiological birth process.
