- Not to be confused with the Hospital, early examples called pharmacies.
A pharmacy is an office in a school, hospital, industrial factory, or other organization that distributes medicines, medical supplies, and in some cases even medical and dental care. In a traditional pharmacy setting, the pharmacist distributes prescription drugs or order forms. The English term comes from the medieval Latin word dispensaria and a cognate with the Latin verb dispensare , "to distribute".
The term also has the ancient Victorian age, in 1862 the term pharmacies used in the folk song Blaydon Races. Folk songs distinguish pharmacies from the operation of Doctors and Hospitals. The emergence of large industrial plants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as large steel mills, created requests for first-in-home responder services, including fire extinguishers, emergency medical services, and even primary care closer to the point of need, under the control of companies more closely, and in many cases, better capital than any service that the surrounding city can provide. In such contexts, doctors and company nurses are regularly on duty or being summoned.
Electronic pharmacies are designed to ensure the efficient and consistent expenditure of active ingredients and excipients in a secure data environment with complete auditability. The standard dispensary system consists of various modules such as manual streaming, surveillance, mass outlay, prescription management and interfacing with external systems. Such systems may exclude more than medical-related products such as alcohol, tobacco or vitamins and minerals.
