Design summary is a document for a design project developed by a person or team ('designer' or 'design team') in consultation with 'clients'. They describe the delivery and scope of the project including any product or work (function and aesthetics), time and budget. They can be used for many projects including in the fields of architecture, interior design and industrial design. The design briefs are also used to evaluate the effectiveness of the design after it is produced and during the manufacturing process to keep the project on track and within budget. Some companies rely on them more than others but there are steps toward greater accountability in the design process and thus many people find it most useful. They usually change over time and are adjusted as the scope of the project develops. Often they are 'signed' by clients and designers at some stage in the project.

The design summary can use the following layout:

  1. Title page
  2. Table # * Previous Achievement
  3. Problem Statement
    • Problem Description
    • Limitations
    • Budget
    • Time
    • Problem Requirement
  4. Goal
    • What you want to accomplish
      • Deadline
  5. Solution Analysis
    • Risk/Benefit
    • Planned Solutions
    • Sketch
  6. Synopsis
    • Evaluation
    • Conclusion/Summary
