Ikhtisar metode

The Cornell method provides a systematic format for compacting and managing records. This recording system is important as a high school or college student. Students divide the paper into two columns: the recorder column (usually on the right) is twice the size of the question/keyword field (on the left). Students must leave five to seven lines, or about two in (5 cm), at the bottom of the page.

Notes from lecture or teaching are written in the recording column; notes usually consist of the main ideas of texts or lectures, and long ideas are paraphrased. Long sentences are avoided; symbols or abbreviations are used instead. To help future reviews, relevant questions (which should be recorded as soon as possible so that lectures and questions will be fresh in the minds of students) or key words are written in the keyword column. These notes can be taken from various sources of information, such as fiction books, DVDs, lectures, textbooks, etc.

Within 24 hours of taking notes, students should revise and write questions and then write a brief summary on five to seven lines down the page. This helps improve understanding of the topic. When learning is good for tests or quizzes, students have concise but detailed and relevant notes from the previous class.

When reviewing material, students may include the logging column (right) when trying to answer questions/keywords in the keyword or sign column (left). Students are encouraged to reflect on material and review notes regularly.

Study of effectiveness

A study published in 2010 by Wichita State University compares two methods of taking notes in secondary English classes, and found that Cornell's note taking may be of additional value in cases where students are asked to synthesize and apply learned knowledge, while guided notes methods appear become better for basic recall.

The Cornell format is one of the most commonly recommended recording formats by university websites for student support. However, Cornell's notes may be less effective than using regular records for a particular subject.

Another study published in summer 2013 found that "Students who were taught CN (Cornell notes) took better notes than those who did not, but they did not have higher achievement results." The study also states that "Through an assessment scoring analysis, I found no significant difference between intervention and baseline on achievement."
