George Slocum had been feeling for years that the automotive industry needed a trade newspaper and in 1925 he got financial support to get started. Automotive News began as Automotive Daily News and the first edition appeared on August 27, 1925 by Slocum Publishing. It was published in New York with Slocum as Detroit's advertising manager. The head angel of Automotive Daily News is Bernarr Macfadden.

In 1933, Slocum bought another investor and moved the newspaper to Detroit, and publication was changed from five times a week to twice a week - Wednesday and Saturday. The midweek edition was dropped in June 1938, and by June 4 the paper name was changed to Automotive News . Subscription price is reduced from $ 6 per year to $ 4 per year. In 1939, the day of publication was changed to Monday.

5000 circulation when Slocum moves newspaper to Detroit. It grew to 12,000 at the start of World War II but fell to 8,748 during the war. During 1942-1945, when there was no automotive industry, Automotive News retained 73 percent of its circulation. From 1936, Pete Wemhoff served as editor manager, editor, publisher, and general manager for the next 35 years.

Slocum Publishing Co., ran the publication until 1971, when Crain Communications bought it. Keith Crain became publisher and editorial director.

Today, Automotive News is part of the Crain Communications Automotive News Group. Keith E. Crain is editor-in-chief of the Automotive News and chairman of the board of Crain Communications. Jason Stein is an editor and publisher.
