Video Template talk:Non-free web screenshot

(RESOLVED) Clarify: web screenshots only

People are using this tag for "any image I found on the web", maybe a warning of some kind regarding this is appropriate. I will give this a couple days for responses. - cohesiont 05:46, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

I think that's a good idea, and the text saying that should be in bold. I myself had been using it like that until someone let me know that was not what this license was for. I went back and tagged all of my "screenshots" for a fairusereview, and found that *most* of the images I saw in the category that day seemed to be of pictures of people or other graphics taken from a web page, and NOT the entire web page screenshot. This needs to be taken care of so no more violations or misunderstandings occur. (Arundhati Bakshi (talk o contribs)) 19:06, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I also added a {{video-screenshot}} because some people were also having to use this for screenshot of videos/flash animations that were from online sources that didn't fall under {{vodcast-screenshot}}. These I think are valid fair use probably, but it's really a different sort of use than web-screenshots. The web-screenshot choice has been removed from the dropdown menu on the upload page also, I don't think many people actually need this tag, and if they do they are probably more savvy users who know where to find it. I will give this a couple more days for other opinions still - cohesiont 19:39, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
I think that's a good idea. The copyright problem I found especially confusing . . . its kind of daunting to a new user to click on "Licensing" and see such a huge list of items come down . . . it is confusing, but maybe if the users had to learn to actually put in the tags themselves more they would understand better what they actually mean, and it would cause less of a headache for you admins. The way it is, a novice user might just click anything because they don't know what's going on. thanks for helping with this! (Arundhati Bakshi (talk o contribs)) 21:42, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Seems to have been resolved; tag now has "This tag is not appropriate for images and media found on websites; it should be used for screenshots of websites only." at the bottom.--Elvey (talk) 18:24, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Encouraging fair-use rationale

I have proposed a wording change to our non-free image templates, and I'm trying to keep the discussion centralized here. Please join in the discussion. (ESkog)(Talk) 11:30, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Options

An option to this tag that removes the "To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use, as well as the source of the work and copyright information." text would be appropriate; it doesn't make sense when used 'as is' for an image that has a fair use rationale, e.g. [1].

e.g.

| hasFUR and/or

| hasRationale
